Introduction
Welcoming a new calico kitty to your growing furry family? Uniquely colored predominantly white with splashes of orange and black, these adorable felines have been stealing pet parents' hearts for centuries. One surprising fact is almost all calicos are female. In fact, due to a cat's genetic makeup, there's about a 1 in 3,000 chance that a male cat will be a calico. With that in mind, here's a list of fitting names for your new female feline!
Calico Cat Names in Pop Culture
As well as having unique coloration, calicos are considered a symbol of luck around the world. For example, Germans call calicos glückskatze, which literally translates to "lucky cat". Calicos are considered so lucky that Japanese sailors would bring calicos onto their ships to bring their voyage good fortune.
Perhaps the most famous calico of all time is the Japanese statue Maneki-Neko, or "The Beckoning Cat". This figurine is commonly seen in houses and shop fronts and is usually a calico Japanese Bobtail sitting down with either its right or left paw raised.
Depending on which paw is raised, a Maneki-Neko represents something different. For example, if the left paw is raised, Maneki-Neko is inviting people into a venue, while if the right paw is raised, it's attracting more money. As a result, people generally place a left paw in their business and a right paw in their home.
The origins of Maneki-Neko are not entirely clear, but legends say it comes from the Edo period. A poor monk who could barely afford food used to share his meals with his cat. One day, the monk asked the cat to bring him good fortune. Shortly afterward, some samurai sought shelter with the monk during a rainstorm, saying the cat had beckoned them over. The monk shared his teachings, and inspired by what he'd said, one of the samurai revealed himself to be Naotaka Li, lord of Hikone, and donated rice fields and land to the monk, turning his small hut into a grand temple. You can still visit the Gotokuji Temple today, which is adorned with hundreds of Maneki-Nekos.
Calico Cat Name Considerations
When picking a new name for your little lion, it's important to consider their personality and appearance to choose the "purrfect" name. While calicos seem to have similar colorations, all are unique, and you may even notice a pattern on your kitten, which will help you pick a name. If your cat only has tiny tufts of orange and black, Smudge might make a fitting moniker. If your tiny tiger loves to laze around and get waited on hand and paw, then Princess might make an ideal name. Take plenty of time to pick out the right name for your calico kitty and pick a name that fits their appearance and personality.
