Castlevania Dog Names

In Greek mythology, Cerberus was a three-headed dog that guarded the entrance to the daunting Underworld (Hades). The dead could enter, but no one else. Oh, and no one was allowed back outside. As if that wasn't enough to intimidate the manliest of men, Cerberus also had the tail of a serpent, a mane made out of snakes (like Medusa, but not) and lion claws. So obviously, the Castlevania series had to incorporate him in their series of games. But we’ll talk more about him as a recurring character in a minute.  

To better understand Cerberus as a character, it's necessary to dive into Castlevania itself. Developed by Konami in the 1980's, Castlevania is horror mecca, complete with Count Dracula, vampire clans, a family – the Belmonts – that hunt these creatures of the night, and a bunch of crazy, terrifying monsters. The franchise grew huge in Japan, where it originated, but took a while to pick up steam in Europe and the U.S. But once it did, it essentially became an iconic franchise worldwide.  

It's made it onto Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Xbox, Wii, PC, Game Boy and Game Boy Advance, to name a few. And ever since then, people have gone crazy over it. All of it. 

Think of it as the ultimate vampire hunting experience, with enchanted bloodlines, Lords of Darkness, and even Bram Stoker's Dracula. The book is featured, and was a major source of inspiration for the whole franchise. 

So logically, Cerberus is a perfect fit. The recurring three-headed dog is a boss fight in the games, one that there's many guides for. This is in large part because the dog is massive, jumps high, and spits fire. As the series progressed, they added other elements as well, such as giving each head its own elemental attack. 

As any gamer can attest, keeping track of one large dog, with one head, can be enough work. Especially in similar dark series, like the Dark Souls Sif fight. But three heads? All with their own attacks? It means that dodging can be futile if not done correctly, because if one head misses, there's another two shots ready to fire. 

It's no wonder that Cerberus is well-known to fans of the series. They have boss fight memories from many of the games, including but not limited to Dracula X, Bloodlines, Symphony of the Night, Legacy of Darkness, and Encore of the Night.
