Canarian Warren Hound Dog Names

The Canarian Warren Hound is a rare breed and it can be difficult to find one of these dogs listed among the elite canines of the dog show world or a beloved companion on the rich and famous. There are few breeds native to the Canary Islands and only one that is beginning to gain popularity in the United States, the Preso Canario. This massive, dominant dog is almost a polar opposite of the Canarian Warren Hound and thankfully so since Bane, the Preso Canario made headlines when he, unfortunately, mauled a woman in San Francisco. There have been no reports of the Canarian Warren Hound becoming vicious and attacking a human.

Researchers believe the Canarian Warren Hound is the immediate descendant of the Egyptian Dog and is considered an ancient breed. The breed dates back almost seven thousand years and mainly inhabited the Iberian Peninsula. Eventually, Canarian Warren Hounds were imported into the Canary Islands by Mediterranean merchants and mummified skeletons of dogs believed to be the Canarian Warren Hound have been found in tombs of pharaohs in Egypt. The breed was used extensively to hunt small game such as hares and ferrets and throughout the centuries evolved into a more versatile hunting dog with excellent tracking prowess. The Canarian Warren Hound is a pack animal and prefers to hunt with other dogs. They are well-known as a silent hunter and rarely make noise when out on a hunt. The Canarian Warren Hound did not escape World War II unscathed, but was on the brink of extinction when devoted fanciers of the breed searched through the Canary Islands for any remaining Canarian Warren Hounds. A new breeding program was launched using the remaining dogs. The breed is gaining popularity throughout Spain where it is used primarily as a hunting dog and secondary as a companion. The La Real Sociedad Canina de Espana (RSCE) or the Spanish Kennel Club has recognized the Canarian Warren Hound as an indigenous breed and it has even been recognized by the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI). Many animal organizations have begun exporting unwanted dogs from Spain and there have been many Canarian Warren Hounds exported to different countries, including the United States, by these organizations.
