Canaan Dog Names

Even though the Canaan Dog is an ancient breed, their popularity has dwindled and you do not see many in North America. They are, however, gaining popularity and hopefully, diligent breeders are able to rescue the breed from the brink of distinction. The Canaan Dog is well known in Israel and is even seen on the Israel Kennel Club (IKC) logo and on postage stamps. Meet Zik and his breeder Myrna Shiboleth. Shiboleth has been considered the world authority of Canaan Dogs and has bred and finished many throughout her illustrious career. She began her Canaan Dog breeding program in Israel, and has placed Canaan Dogs throughout the world with different breeders in an attempt to revive the breed; however, after much thought and research, she moved her program to Italy. Shiboleth was forced out of her home of 47 years by the Israel Lands Authority. Her former home was in Sha’ar HaGai, located near Jerusalem and she was unable to successfully appeal the eviction order. Zik made the move from Israel to Italy with Shiboleth and has been campaigning throughout Europe. During his campaign, he has accumulated quite the array of championships and big wins. On November 8, 2008, Zik competed at the Arad International Dog Show and finished his Israeli championships giving him a CAC and CACIB championship as well as winning best of opposite sex. Zik’s name is formally written World Winner (2008), Junior World Winner (2006), European Winner (2008), Israeli, French, Luxemburg, Hungarian Champion Zik.

Zik’s owner has been breeding and showing dogs since 1967. During that time she has finished several championships and also run a boarding kennel. Shiboleth has also done dog training and worked with many dogs with behavioral issues. For a number of years, she was an animal behavior research technician with Tel Aviv University and been a professional nutrition consultant to veterinarians in Israel. She is a published author and has been the guest speaker for many canine workshops on health, breed development, nutrition, and behavior. She also lectures on the Canaan Dog, their history and their future. Shiboleth even studied with the Israeli Kennel Club for apprentice judges. She has written several books on the Canaan Dog and her newest book published in 2008, “Tails of Shaar Hagai” is a memoir and details the work she has done with the various breeds of dogs as well as other animals, including exotics. After settling fully in Italy, Shiboleth is currently showing several other Canaan Dogs throughout Europe.
