Introduction
Officially known as the Republic of Cameroon, Cameroon is a country in Central Africa that is bordered by Nigeria (to the west), Chad (to the northeast), Central African Republic (to the east) and Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and the Republic of the Congo (to the south). Cameroon has two official languages; French and English and diverse natural areas to include beaches, deserts, mountains, rainforests and savannas. The country’s geological and cultural diversity has earned it the nickname “Africa in Miniature”.
When seeking a name for your special friend, take the time to explore Cameroon. The diversity of the country makes it a great place to turn for unique name opportunities for your canine companion.
Cameroon Dog Names In Pop Culture
Football is Cameroon’s top sport with numerous well-known players. And of course, there are dogs that have the names of Cameroon soccer players. Alex Song, who wears the number 6, brings to mind Alex the Dog, who was the advertising mascot for Stroh’s beer in the 80’s. At the height of his popularity, Alex appeared in parades and was seen on Good Morning America and the Today show. Alex the Dog was the inspiration for a series of toys, posters, cologne, shampoo and hand lotion. He further infiltrated pop culture when Tone Loc, a hip-hop artist, mentioned him in the song “Funky Cold Medina”.
George Elokobi is another soccer player from Cameroon. George is also the name of a 221 pound English Mastiff who gained recognition after being inadvertently stranded in Japan when United Airlines recently suspended its pet travel program. George, whose full name is George Jefferson, initially traveled to Japan with his person, U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Jennifer McKay, who is a liaison to U.S. forces Japan at Yokota in western Tokyo. Ms. McKay paid $3200 to bring George, in his 100-pound crate, to Japan two years ago with United’s air cargo service, assuming he would return to the United States the same way when her assignment ended. After three dogs were sent to the wrong place and one dog died after their owner put it in an overhead bin, United suspended its pet transportation service to review its process.
Unfortunately for George and Ms. McKay, the timing of the review is poor. She is headed for a new assignment and of course, wants to bring George, who she considers her family. While there are other options to get George home, they are either very expensive, very inconvenient or both. For example, for George to fly with All Nippon Airways, it would cost around $31,000. An Air Mobility Command flight, which is how military pet owners typically transport their pets to and from Japan, is not an option because the maximum weight is set at 150 pounds, including the carrier. Ms. McKay stated that many airlines don’t carry English Mastiffs, regardless of size. In her efforts to find a way to get George back to the US, she checked into United Parcel Service (who she found does not ship mammals) and FedEx which only ships live animals between businesses. Ms. McKay is hopeful pet travel will restart with United in time to get George home.
Cameroon Dog Name Considerations
Choosing a name that you feel is just right for your canine companion is no easy feat. After all, you would like to the name to fit your pup and their unique qualities, while also being something that you think you won’t get tired of saying multiple times a day for years to come. With that in mind, finding the right name may take some effort. One place to look when you are seeking a name for your dog is Cameroon. The country's environmental and cultural diversity leads to a myriad of unique naming opportunities.
You may turn to Cameroon for a name for your dog should the country have meaning to you or should something about your pup make you think of the country and something that it offers.
