Introduction
The Bukovina Sheepdog is a rare livestock guardian dog known by several different names including the Ciobanesc Romanesc de Bucovina, Ciobanesc de Bucovina, Romanian Bukovina Sheepdog, and Bukovina Wolfdog. They are mostly found within the Carpathian Mountains and are becoming more popular as a family companion and guard dog. The Bukovina Sheepdog is a giant breed bred to protect their flocks from bears and wolves. They are the oldest of the three Romanian shepherd dogs. Not known for being aggressive, the Bukovina Sheepdog is a calm and balanced dog that when properly trained can become an excellent companion. Because they are a guardian dog, they will be protective of their family and very aloof towards strangers.
Bukovina Sheepdog Dog Names In Pop Culture
Ada the Bukovina Sheepdog’s puppy photo taken at only two months of age has become the poster child of sorts for the breed. Who can resist looking at cute puppy pictures, especially fluffy, sad-eyed puppies? Ada lives in a remote village near Buzau, Romania. Many people can see Ada’s photo on websites that are promoting the Bukovina Sheepdog breed. Alongside Ada’s cute puppy photo, you will usually see Aluna’s adult photo so you can see an adult Bukovina Sheepdog. Aluna lives in Bucharest, Romania with her owner Lucian Bolcas. Because the breed is rare, it is difficult to find breeders unless you search within their native Romania. It is also difficult to find any being shown in conformation or performance events since only the Romanian Kennel Club has fully accepted the Bukovina Sheepdog as a legitimate breed. The American Kennel Club (AKC) has not recognized the Bukovina Sheepdog. There are no known breeders of Bukovina Sheepdog within the United States. The American Rare Breed Association (ARBA) also does not have any Bukovina Sheepdogs listed in their registry.
The Bukovina Sheepdog hails from the Carpathian Mountains in the northeastern region of Romania. Many researchers feel the Bukovina Sheepdog has descended from various breeds that were bred together during the 18th century and used primarily as livestock guardian dogs to guard sheep and cattle. The Bukovina Sheepdog has undergone several name changes and is still known by many of those names. In 1982 the breed standard was written and the breed was given the name Bukovina Sheepdog. The breed standard was updated in 2001 by the Asociaia Chinologica Romana or the Romanian Kennel Club. The current breed standard was accepted on March 29, 2002. In 1987 the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) General Assembly located in Jerusalem established a similar breed standard model. There are only three Romanian shepherd breeds and all are native to the Carpathian region: the Bukovina Sheepdog, Mioritic Shepherd, and Carpatin Shepherd. The Bukovina Sheepdog is rarely seen outside of its native Romania, with the greatest population of Bukovina Sheepdogs being within the Carpathian Mountains.
Bukovina Sheepdog Dog Name Considerations
Your biggest challenge when deciding to bring home a Bukovina Sheepdog is actually finding a breeder. There are no known Bukovina Sheepdog breeders within North America and you will most likely need to import a Bukovina Sheepdog into the United States which can become very expensive. If you do decide to import a Bukovina Sheepdog to add to your family, it will take time to find the right breeder and to set up shipping to bring them into the country. After all of that, you will probably want to spend time getting to know your new Bukovina Sheepdog puppy before you decide on a name for your new bundle of joy. Most times your new puppy will help you find just the right name to fit their personality. Being a large breed and having to be at least 12 weeks of age before they can be imported into the United States, your new Bukovina Sheepdog will not be a tiny little puppy, but rather a larger, possibly rambunctious, dog and therefore, a cutesy name may not be the best option. Being native to Romania, you may begin your search by looking for names that have roots in Romania. Some Romanian names will seem odd or difficult to pronounce, but there are many more that will easily roll off your tongue.
