Many tv series creators around the world have realized that the fastest way to reach a human heart and make us emotionally invested in the stories they tell is to have a dog character. These doggos are usually so innocent and sweet that it is impossible not to love them and not to get attached to them. One of such puppers is Martin, a dog from an American comedy tv series Downward Dog. The series follows the adventures of Martin, a dog who likes to pose philosophical themes and discuss ideas about the universe. Martin sees Nan, his owner as a life partner, and he loves her profoundly. He is devoted to her and a bit obsessed, but just because he is suffering from loneliness, something that a 21^st-century human can relate to.

Nan is a typical millennial who, unfortunately, has less and less time for her dog due to her increasing workload at Clark and Bow Outfitters, and her relationship with Jason, her ex-boyfriend and a “friend with benefits.” Martin can, because of all of this, become jealous and vindictive, and even unfaithful in his eyes, and does this whenever he feels that Nan is neglecting him. Even though the show was canceled and is currently being pitched to other platforms and networks, it explores an important theme that dogs of today go through. We are getting busier and busier, especially if we live in cities, and can often, unwillingly, spend less time with our dogs than needed. We can often neglect them, only dedicating a certain amount of time to them, which can make them feel lonely and depressed.

However, series such as Downward Dog try to explore this issue and shed light on it. Michael Killen, one of the executive producers of the show, said that having talking dogs in a show used to be a cheap way to get a few laughs, and therefore he wanted to change things up. Martin talks about the complexity of relationships, about the city life, about the dog owners who don’t have time for their pets, and about the complicated emotions dogs feel when left alone. Michael explained that they wanted to have an animal who offers a realistic and emotional view of modern-day relationships and life with a city millennial who has her own set of failures and emotional rollercoasters. All in all, Martin is somewhat of the voice of reason and the voice of mess, as he goes through his issues and tries to resolve them, but as you can imagine, things are three times as hard for him because he is, in the end, a dog.
