Cory was diagnosed with canine epilepsy at the age of three. Cory would have seizures after strenuous activity and sometimes after a full moon, according to his owner. In fact, Ms. DeMers relates that Cory had multiple seizure triggers. After a great deal of trial and error, Ms. DeMers realized that many of Cory's seizures took place after he had eaten. DeMers began to do her own research, and she wondered if a change in Cory's diet would make a difference in his seizure activity.

DeMers stopped feeding Cory any commercially made food. This included not only kibble but canned food; furthermore, this meant DeMers would not even feed Cory what is touted as organic food. DeMers began to feed Cory a totally raw diet. In addition, DeMers found that some epileptic dogs are vitamin B1 deficient. With this knowledge, DeMers changed Cory's diet. Cory's seizures did not stop immediately, but, eventually they did. Cory lived the last five years of his life seizure-free.

Shawn buys a "big dog" (breed unknown) in a series titled "Picket Fences" in season five.
