Introduction
The Blue Picardy Spaniel is a versatile hunting dog mainly used to locate and retrieve game in harsh conditions. This is a different breed from the Picardy Spaniel and is slightly smaller, faster, and has a black and grey coat that has a blue hue. The Blue Picardy Spaniel is able to hunt in any type of terrain and has a lot of stamina. They originated in France and excel in hunting trials throughout Europe. The Blue Picardy Spaniel is excellent with children and seems to thrive on companionship with humans. They do require early socialization but are responsive to reward-based training. Expect to spend time playing games with your Blue Picardy Spaniel to keep them from becoming bored and destructive to your property.
Blue Picardy Spaniel Dog Names in Pop Culture
The Blue Picardy Spaniel originated in France as an all-around hunting dog able to track and retrieve different types of game over rough terrain and in harsh weather. They are a hardy canine that when not in the field hunting, makes an excellent companion for a family. The Blue Picardy Spaniel is good with children and can adapt to a home where they are not used for hunting as long as they are given opportunity to expend much of their energy. Peek-a-chou, or Peeka for short, was imported into Petaluma, California from France. Her breeder, Jerome Malbaut, strives to produce Blue Picardy Spaniels that conform to the breed standard as well as maintain a natural hunting instinct. Peeka’s owner, Christine Plociniak, was determined to find a female to add to her breeding program with sound conformation and an excellent temperament. Peeka’s father is a French conformation champion and has been exhibited throughout Europe. Plociniak’s kennel, Sweetwater Blue Picardy Spaniel, is well-known in sporting dog circles on the West coast and it is because she is dedicated to preserving the breed.
In Susan Varga’s blog Life With Our Blue Picardy Spaniels: Chapter 3 Zoe, Coullah, & Finn, she has been faithfully posting about her dogs’ activities. Varga has been using her blog to promote the Blue Picardy Spaniel breed and encourage others who love the breed to begin working together for AKC recognition. The American Kennel Club (AKC) does not recognize the Blue Picardy Spaniel, however, the United Kennel Club (UKC) and Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) do and the breed is allowed to compete in all UKC and CKC sanctioned events. The Blue Picardy Spaniel community is a tight-knit family and they offer encouragement and support to each other including hosting Picardy Picnics. Vicki and David Duncan of Brighthope Kennels, Blue Picardy Spaniel breeders, started hosting these picnics in September 2010. Varga, along with her husband, Zoe, Coullah, and Finn, attended this Picardy Picnic where Blue Picardy Spaniel owners brought side dishes to share while the Duncan’s provided BBQ. The Blue Picardy Spaniels attending played games and enjoyed being with each other. An obstacle was set up each dog was timed as they went through it. Zoe went through the course in just 44 seconds, the fastest of Varga’s three but her time was not the fastest of all the dogs present. After the successful first Picardy Picnic, Vicki and David Duncan used a portion of their property to set up a park-like setting where Blue Picardy Spaniels can come and be off-leash for playtime with other Blue Picardy Spaniels. They named this place Picardy Park.
Blue Picardy Spaniel Dog Name Considerations
The Blue Picardy Spaniel is considered a rare breed within the United States and Canada however; there are a handful of reputable breeders willing to help you find the right puppy for your family. You also have the choice to import a new Blue Picardy Spaniel from Europe, but this can be pricey and time-consuming. Once your new Blue Picardy Spaniel puppy has come home, you will need to start searching for a name. Finding a French name would be an obvious choice since the breed originated in France and is still very prevalent in that country. There are several fun and meaningful names to choose from for your new little boy or girl puppy. Before deciding on a name, do a little bit of research on the names you are considering and take the time to get to know your new Blue Picardy Spaniel puppy. Their personality or little quirks will lend a hand in finding the right name for them. For instance, a boy puppy who has moved in and taken over the home can be given the tag Enzo, which is a great choice since it means rules the home. A little girl puppy who has a very loving and sweet nature will do well with the name Meline which means sweet as honey.
