Introduction
Black Sheep Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
Mike Donnelly is a fun-loving, albeit goofy guy who enjoys working with kids. Mike's work at the Rec Center allows him to mentor young kids, and Mike takes one young fellow in particular under his wing. Mike notices one young man as very talented on the football field, but that he has no one to practice with him away from the Rec Center. Mike decides to take extra time with the young man, promising to spend a few Saturday afternoons practicing football skills. Mike's heart is in the right place, even if he does tend to make some silly gaffes.
Mike the Dog is likely one canine you'll recognize, especially if you love movies from the 1980s. Mike the Dog starred as the top canine in Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Spot Marks the X, and Mutts. While most movie buffs will recognize Mike the Dog from only the Beverly Hills film, Mike had an outstanding career during his lifetime. Mike the Dog played the role of Matisse, a character who provided a significant bit of comic relief. Matisse and a homeless man named Jerry Baskin become the best of friends after Jerry loses his own dog. Jerry bonds more with Matisse than with any other character. In fact, Roger Ebert in reviewing the film stated that Matisse (Mike) should receive an honorary Oscar for his brilliance.
Mike is a Border Collie, and like his kind, he is highly intelligent and willing to please his owners. Strangely enough, Mike did not begin life with a happy family who saw his potential and got him enrolled in training classes. Mike was found by Clint Rowe, who eventually became his owner, tied to a house on a ranch in Northern California. Once Mike was brought into a loving home, he flourished. Mike was also involved in a number of other projects, although none of them garnered him the fame he found as a cast member of Down and Out in Beverly Hills. While Mike did go on to work on other projects, such as Kidsongs, he is best known for his comedic effort in the 1986 film. Mike has crossed the rainbow bridge, but we can be assured that he's making someone laugh with his playful antics over there.
Black Sheep Inspired Dog Name Considerations
David Spade, whose character ends up with the job of babysitting Mike Donnelly and making sure that he does not get into trouble (which he inevitably does) is connected with a number of dogs in his career and personal life - or at least his name is. He is associated with a pet clothing line that he claims "fits dogs of all shapes and sizes." With this in mind, any dog may benefit from a name inspired by the Chris Farley comedy, Black Sheep.
