Introduction
The Black Norwegian Elkhound, otherwise known as the Norwegian Moose Dog, Norsk Elghund Black, Black Elkhound, or Norsk Elghund Sort, is a rare Spitz breed that is hardly ever found outside of its native Norway. Coat color is the only difference between the Black Norwegian Elkhound and the more common gray Norwegian Elkhound. They are easy to train, make excellent hunting dogs and companion dogs. The Black Norwegian Elkhound learns best when positive reinforcement is used; they do not respond well to rough training techniques. They are almost too smart for their own good and can many times outsmart unsuspecting owners. The Black Norwegian Elkhound is an active dog and loves to be outdoors in the cooler weather.
Black Norwegian Elkhound Dog Names In Pop Culture
The Black Norwegian Elkhound is an extremely rare breed of dog. It is a rare occurrence to find a Black Norwegian Elkhound outside of Norway. Larger dog clubs such as the American Kennel Club (AKC), Canadian Kennel Club (CKC), or Kennel Club of the United Kingdom (KC) do not have this canine listed, therefore, this breed is not seen at any of the major dog performance events or televised dog shows. It may be that the Black Norwegian Elkhound is the best kept secret of Norway. There are many legends surrounding this primitive breed including the legend of Bram, the Norwegian Elkhound owned by Tore Ullin a young, outgoing Norwegian. Tore was known throughout the land as an honest and trustworthy man. Tore attended a midsummer dance and festival. On the second night, he was engaged in a fight with another man named Kransen from the Kvernbro Valley. Kransen was known to be an evil man. The fight occurred when Kransen threatened to harm Bram. During this fight, Tore accidentally killed the other man. Since Tore was a skilled hunter and woodsman he fled to a mountain valley with Bram and they lived off the land for several years, living in caves. Tore and Bram escaped the wrath of Kransen’s evil and ruthless clan.
During an especially harsh winter when the snow and ice were deep, Bram’s long, hairy tail would become weighed down with ice crystals and snow. His tail would then become so heavy and have to drag behind him through the snow and this made hunting more difficult for him and Tore. One day Tore devised a plan to help Bram. He took a leather strip that had been cut from the hide of a moose and curled Bram’s tail over his back, securing it with the leather strip. From that time on, the Norwegian Elkhound had a curly tail, one of their signature traits.
