Introduction
The Black Forest Hound, also known as the Slovensky Kopov, Slovakian Hound, or Slovak Hound, is a medium-sized scent hound that originated in Slovakia. They are excellent hunters and have high endurance. These dogs are not easily intimidated and therefore need a strong leader to keep them from taking over the home. They can be easy to train as long as there is consistency in their training. The Black Forest Hound was bred to hunt wild boar and can have a very tenacious personality. They are naturally wary of strangers making them great watchdogs. The Black Forest Hound does well with other dogs they are raised with, however, should be closely watched with other pets.
Black Forest Hound Dog Names In Pop Culture
While there are not many Black Forest Hounds living within the United States and Canada, they are beginning to see a rise in interest and people are starting to look into these rare breed hounds. Finding a breeder within the United States or even Canada may be like trying to find a needle in a haystack, but you can always check with the American Kennel Club’s Marketplace to find a breeder or there is the option to go overseas and import a Black Forest Hound. There are still not many breeders to be found even in their native Slovakia, so it might take a bit of patience and a lot of research before you are able to find a Black Forest Hound to add to your family. The Slovensky Kopov Lohyna Kennel located in Slovakia is one of the better known breeders of the Black Forest Hound. They produce Black Forest Hounds from working bloodlines, meaning these dogs are used for the purpose they were bred; to hunt wild boar. Stefan Pavelka and Zuzana Pavelkova are the proud owners of Slovensky Kopov Lohyna Kennels and they have produced some of the top working Black Forest Hounds.
Diana Lohyna, or Diana for short, is one of the Black Forest Hounds they have bred and trained. She has been tenacious in the field, being one of the top female Black Forest Hounds in various field trials across Slovakia and Eastern Europe. Diana was bred to a Black Forest Hound they purchased named Beny, or Beny Hudecov Dvor. Beny is also an excellent boar hunter, although he is not as decorated as Diana. While Diana was not interested in standing pretty within the conformation ring, Slovensky Kopov Lohyna Kennels does have a new shining star named Taro. Taro does like to hunt out in the field, however, he also enjoys preening before the judges in conformation. Taro is more formally known as Karat Taro Lohyna and has earned his CACT title as well as his CAJC titles. Taro has also won several best of breeds at shows across Slovakia.
For those interested in the Black Forest Hound, they are commonly referred to as Slovensky Kopov and have been accepted into the American Kennel Club’s Foundation Stock Service (AKC FSS). This means they are one step away from becoming a fully recognized AKC breed that can compete in all AKC sanctioned events. The Black Forest Hound is the only scent hound in Czechoslovakia and they were adopted as the national dog breed of Slovakia. The Black Forest Hound has a black coat with tan markings and some people may mistake them for the Black and Tan Coonhound. The Black Forest Hound was bred to hunt wild boar, therefore, they must have a tenacious attitude and extreme stamina to track boar through the underbrush.
Black Forest Hound Dog Name Considerations
Deciding to commit to love and care for a dog is a big decision and one that should be completely researched before you dive in. A dog can add so much to your life, however, consider your family’s ability and time available for a dog then look for a breed that will fit your family’s needs. A high energy dog will need a family that likes to be out and doing things. The Black Forest Hound would fall into the category of being a higher energy dog that needs a lot of room to run and explore. This breed was bred for one purpose, to hunt wild boar, therefore they have a lot of stamina and can run for long periods of time without tiring.
If you have decided the Black Forest Hound is the right dog for you and your family and you have located a puppy to adopt, it is time to start searching for the perfect name for your new bundle of energy. Being the national dog of Slovakia, it might be an easy choice to start your search with names that are influenced by Slovak culture. Many of the Slovak names are similar to names we are used to within the United States such as Lukas, Jakub, Ema, and Maddie. Then there are names that are more Slovak sounding such as Kravino, Dusek, Sobeska, and Svitla. No matter what name you pick for your new Black Forest Hound puppy, be sure it is a name that everyone in the family can agree on.
