Introduction
Black Beauty Book Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
She may not have been black like Black Beauty, but she was definitely a hero. Beauty was a Wirehaired Terrier who was a search and rescue pup in the Second World War. She was actually considered to be the very furst rescue dog. Born on January 4th, 1939, she was owned by Bill Barnett, who was the Superintendent of the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA). Although Barnett would bring Beauty along with him on missions, he did not do so expecting her to pitch in and help. He just wanted her companionship. However, Beauty surprised him and everyone else by being a pawesome search and rescue pooch.
Barnett led one of the animal rescue parties in London during the Blitz in 1940 and Beauty went with him. These teams were responsible for finding animals that were trapped by the rubble caused by the bomb blasts. While out on a rescue mission with Barnett in 1940, Beauty suddenly started digging in the rubble next to the rescue teams. Within a few minutes, the rescuers noticed that she had found a buried cat who was still alive. This cat was the first of 63 animals that Beauty found during her years in service from 1940 until 1945.
Beauty was so pawpular during the war that she won several awards and was named the “Original Search and Rescue Dog.” For her dedication and bravery, she was given the PDSA Pioneer Medal, which is an award that is typically only given to humans. She also received a silver medal that says “For Services Rendered” from the Deputy Mayor of Hendon in London. In addition, she was honored with the “Freedom of the City” for Holland Park.
On the 12th of January 1945, Beauty was awarded the Dickin Medal, which was inscribed, “For being the pioneer dog in locating buried air-raid victims while serving with the PDSA Rescue Squad.” This unique award is also referred to as the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross medal. When Beauty passed away in 1950, her medals went to the PDSA and were put on display in “The Animal War” exhibit in the "Imperial War Museum North.”
Beauty is one of the many pooches honored by being buried in the Ilford Animal Cemetery in London, which was founded by and is operated by the PDSA. She is right alongside eleven other animals who were awarded the Dickin Award.
Black Beauty Book Inspired Dog Name Considerations
Get a new dog? Well, then you have got some work to do. First, you need to get the house ready for your new fur buddy. You’ll need to get some tasty treats and kibble, chewy bones to keep your pup’s teeth healthy, some fun doggy toys to play with, a leash and collar to go for walks, a nice cozy dog bed, a veterinary professional to keep your pooch healthy, and the furfect name. Choosing the title for your tail wager does not have to be a chore though, all you need to do is play with them and watch for personality traits and characteristics that can give you a clue.
In keeping with the “Black Beauty” book, some of the character’s names would make some pawsitively adorable doggy names. For instance, Darkie and Black Beauty are both pawfect for a black or dark-colored poochie, Merrylegs is cute for a hyper pup, Captain would be great for a bossy boy, and Grey would be super for a gray dog. If you want your doggo to have a name that means beauty, there are quite a few. For example, Venus is the Roman goddess of Beauty, Diana is the Roman goddess of the Moon, Amara is Greek for eternally beautiful, and Sephora is Hebrew for beautiful light.
