Introduction
The first thing you think about after getting a new dog is what to call it. Panic sets in as one name after another doesn't quite fit, and you are at the point where you are seriously thinking of calling this new companion 'Dog'. The secret to choosing a good name is not to panic, so forget about names, for now at least, "Puppy" or "Dear Dog" will do. Take the time to get to know your new companion. Even if you have had a dog before, they are all different in personality. A day or two without a name will not hurt your new friend; they will be quite happy to have lots of hugs and your attention rather than worry about a name! Once you have spent some time becoming familiar with your dog and you do look at names, one or two will now stand out as great options. We have compiled this list for a dog or puppy that will grow into a large dog. Unless you have a weird sense of humor (and we are not judging you, just stating a fact) names such as Tiny, Micro or Mouse might suit your tiny puppy, but puppies have a habit of growing up, and if your dog is one of the large breeds, they will outgrow the name Micro before too long. To save you time and effort, check our list of big dog names and their meanings - there are many to choose from, and one will suit this new furry addition to your family.
Big Dog Names in Pop Culture
A great example of a gentle giant showcased in the movie genre is a comedy film, based on a large Saint Bernard dog named after the famous composer Ludwig van Beethoven. The movie became a great success and went on to develop into a series of Beethoven movies. The story begins when a group of puppies are stolen by thieves when they break into a pet store; a Saint Bernard puppy escapes and manages to sneak into the home of the Newton family. While the father is anything but pleased with this new family pet, the family manage to convince him to keep the dog. Beethoven helps the children in the family to overcome some of their fears and offers comfort when they are down. The father becomes quite jealous of all the fuss the family are making over this slobbering dog, and as well, Beethoven upsets a BBQ event where the father (George) is trying to entertain important guests.
On a routine examination at the vets, they are told that the Saint Bernard breed of dog is very unstable and could turn violent. Unknown to the family, the vet is corrupt and is doing unethical and deadly animal experimentation, and he was the one who hired the thieves to break into the pet store. After staging a fake attack on himself during a follow up visit with the family, he insists that Beethoven has to be put down. What happens after this is a great tale of dog ingenuity, the family's handling of the situation and the result is - well, we are not going to tell you and spoil the movie. We suggest you watch it, and learn more about this wonderful breed of dog.
In 1993, The Humane Society of the United States nominated Beethoven for the Best Feature Film, and the movie won the award! While veterinarians around the country objected to the movie portraying vets as evil villains with no ethical conscience, the movie went on to enjoy a loyal following. The original dog who played Beethoven was a lovely dog named Kris who showcased the personality of the breed well.
The Saint Bernard grows to be a massive dog and needs a lot of house and yard to fit in. They are not exactly your pocket pet, but they are affectionate and very loyal. They can reach up to 264 pounds (120 Kg) in weight, so if you see the movie and just fall in love with Beethoven, think it through carefully before you bring one into your home. Kris was a well trained actor and became a genuine canine star. Sadly, the original dog is no longer alive; he starred in the first two movies, but other dogs of the same breed were then trained to take over the role after his demise. While the ratings were never generous with their praise for this movie, it became a best seller regardless. It just goes to show that having a cute dog in a movie can be a winning formula.
