Introduction
Officially the Kingdom of Bhutan, Bhutan is a landlocked country in South Asia. Located in the Eastern Himalayas, the country is the least populated nation in the region after the Maldives. Bhutan has a national identity based on Buddhism and is headed by a spiritual leader. The landscape of Bhutan varies; you can find subtropical plains in the southern part of the country to the sub-alpine Himalayan mountains in the northern part of the country, with peaks over 23,000 feet.
A diverse landscape is not all that you will find in Bhutan; you will also encounter a myriad of unique name ideas, one of which may be just right for your pup.
Bhutan Dog Names In Pop Culture
More than ten years ago, Marianne Guillet arrived in Bhutan with her partner, Hendrik, an engineer. Hendrik had been assigned to a project in Bhutan after spending time in Egypt. The homeless dogs in Bhutan significantly impacted Marianne as she saw them barely clinging to life and suffering on the streets without food, water or medical care. She started to bring those in the worst shape home with her. From there, people started calling or stopping her on the street to let her know of dogs in need of help. Fortunately, once taken in by Marianne, the pups were in good hands. While she has a PHD, Marianne is not a medical doctor, however while living in Egypt her love of animals and interest in medicine were brought together when she was working with a veterinarian. It did not take long for her to begin conducting medical procedures and performing surgery.
Marianne now has a clinic on a hill in rural Bhutan and around 150 dogs live on the premises. One of the dogs is Paro Nakou. A woman named Charlotte Phillips was visiting Bhutan when she had noticed a pup that was skin and bones, with mange, sores and a large hole in his neck, lying in a gutter. She tried to find medical assistance for the dog but could not find any. She offered the pup food and tried to comfort him. When she returned home, she tried to track down a woman she had heard about in Bhutan that helps dogs. When she got a response to one of her emails that included a phone number, she called and reached Marianne. Upon describing the dog and where he was, Marianne responded that she had rescued the pup. In fact, she had heard about the dog the day that Charlotte left Bhutan and drove to the town of Paro in order to collect him and help him recover. Marianne sent Charlotte photos of Paro Nakou (means black dog from Paro) and even though she saw how well he was improving, Charlotte could not stop thinking about him. When she arrived at the grounds of the clinic, Paro Nakou was the first of many dogs to reach her to say hello.
Paro Nakou lives on the premises where he has the companionship of other dogs and receives plenty of food and medical care. The dogs are put in their sleeping quarters in the evening so that they don’t bark through the night; that does not stop some dogs, Paro Nakou included, from hiding and coming out when the move to the sleeping quarters is complete.
