Introduction
Beverly Hills, 90210 Dog Names in Pop Culture
On this particular television drama, the leading family (the Walshes) do not have a family dog, per se. Brandon and Brenda's father is not keen on keeping pets, and this prompts Brenda many times to take in and hide strays. However, one special stray that becomes a part of the Walsh family, even for just a little while, is Wally.
In an episode entitled "Spring Training," Brandon works with a little league baseball team. His twin, Brenda, has a problem of a different sort. Brenda happens upon a stray dog, which she quickly brings home and hides in the family garage. The goal is to keep the twins' dad, Jim, from discovering the sweet pooch, who appears to be a terrier mix. The dog is eventually nicknamed Wally, and, by the end of the episode, it is revealed that Wally actually belongs to one of the little league players under Brandon's tutelage.
David and Donna own a dog named Rocky, and sadly, as the episode progresses, the viewer learns that Rocky is quite ill. David and Donna's love for their dog prods them to take part in an animal rights demonstration on their college campus. Although Rocky's breed is never disclosed, the kids' love for the dog is the impetus for the information shown regarding animal testing and cruelty that was so prominent during the late 80s and early 90s. Although Rocky's role was meant to be more thought-provoking than a recurring role, David and Donna's love for Rocky is the basis for doing something the Beverly Hills, 90210 cast was so good at - drawing awareness to an important social cause.
Brenda was particularly apt at picking up and caring for strays. At times, Brenda could persuade her twin Brandon to assist her in concealing the strays she often brought home. Other times, Brenda enlisted the help of the siblings' mutual friends to help hide and feed the various homeless pups Brenda ran across. Brenda's compassion toward animals is a trait that many fans of the show shared with their favorite twin. Brenda's position on helping homeless animals in addition to David and Donna's model behavior protesting animal cruelty brought the issue to the forefront of viewers' conscience, and made a great difference in public awareness.
Beverly Hills, 90210 Inspired Dog Name Considerations
Even though few dog breeds are featured on the show, a look at popular dog breeds around the Beverly Hills area might give inspiration for dog name considerations. Surprisingly enough, there are many mixed breed dogs (particularly terriers) that are popular in Beverly Hills area. The Chihuahua is also a popular breed due to the small size of the breed. The Poodle is also another very popular breed in Southern California. Any of these breeds would be suited for a name from the Beverly Hills, 90210 television series.
