Introduction
The Belgrade Terrier originated in the former Yugoslavia and has a low slung body similar to the Dachshund or Basset Hound. Many historians believe the Belgrade Terrier descends directly from the Small Greek Domestic Dog, a breed that has since become extinct. The Belgrade Terrier is a lively and happy-go-lucky breed but is not really seen as an agile breed, unlike many other terriers, because of the massiveness of their chest. Many breed enthusiasts say the Belgrade Terrier is a typical terrier and loves to find trouble where they can. But they also make great family companions when they are given boundaries and socialized properly from an early age.
Belgrade Terrier Dog Names In Pop Culture
There are a plethora of terrier breeds spanning the globe. The Belgrade Terrier is one of the lesser known terriers and could be on the brink of completely disappearing. However, they do have the characteristic terrier qualities and that makes them just as lovable as their more well-known counterparts such as the Jack Russell Terrier. You will not find a Belgrade Terrier starring alongside Jim Carrey due to their rarity, however, Max McCarter, or better known as Milo, found fame in the 1994 movie The Mask. The director, Chuck Russell wanted a dog that was perky and lively, thus, Max won the role of Milo and the lively, energetic Jack Russell Terrier claimed the hearts of movie-goers everywhere. The Belgrade Terrier could not have pulled off a performance like that due to their long backs and heavy chests. They are lively and energetic, but they are also a more sensible and less agile breed of terrier.
The Belgrade Terrier is very rare, even in Serbia, and is thought to be an ancient breed that is part of a common pariah group of Balkan dogs that were heavily influenced by the Greek Alopekis. Thus, many believe the Belgrade Terrier is directly descended from the Small Greek Domestic Dog. The Belgrade Terrier was developed sometime during the Middle Ages and was used extensively as a ratter and small game hunter. The original Belgrade Terrier was not as long-backed or heavily built as the modern version. Thus, it is believed they were the regional version of the Balkan Terrier, which also descended from the Small Greek Domestic Dog. Today, there are only three types of the historic Balkan Terrier: the Voivodina Pacovan, Serbian Rupar, and Bosnian Jamar. The Belgrade Terrier was determined to not be related to the Balkan Terrier in the 19th century. The modern Belgrade Terrier is thought to have developed from selective breedings to the Serbian Rupar. Before the start of World War I, the Belgrade Terrier was also bred with the Taurunum Dogge, Serbian Mountain Hound, and Bosnian Jamar and by the 1930s the modern breed type had been set. Unfortunately, World War II almost decimated the Belgrade Terrier and the breed has never fully recovered from these devastating losses. There are a few dedicated breeders working to preserve the breed, but it remains on the cusp of extinction. There are no known Belgrade Terriers within the United States or Canada and only a small population lives outside of Serbia.
Belgrade Terrier Dog Name Considerations
While efforts are being made by a handful of breed preservationists, the Belgrade Terrier is close to extinction. Therefore, finding a Belgrade Terrier to add to your family may be a challenge and you may have to settle for a dog that looks similar to the Belgrade Terrier rather than a purebred, unless you can find a breeder willing to send a puppy to you. Importing a Belgrade Terrier will be costly but if your heart is set on one, may be worth the time, cost, and effort. After you have gotten your new Belgrade Terrier home, it will be time to come up with a name that aptly describes them. Take some time to get to know your new family member before settling on a name and make sure your entire family is on board with your choice. Have each family member come up with a few names to put on a list and then each person vote on their favorite. To keep things simpler, you can come up with the list yourself and then have family members vote, that way they are not just voting on the names they picked. Being a Serbian breed, look for names that will honor their storied heritage as well as describe their unique personality.
