Introduction
The Disney movie Bedknobs and Broomsticks, released at the tail end of 1971, centered around a trio of orphans who are evacuated from London during the German Blitz in 1941 and 1942 to the small town of Pepperinge Eye, under the care of the enigmatic but practical student of witchcraft, Eglantine Price, who is attempting to learn spells in order to help the British war effort. The four of them, joined by Professor Emelius Browne, the owner of the first part of the book that he was using to teach Ms. Price her spells, go looking for a spell located in the portion of the book that is missing. The journey takes them from Portobello Road to the animated world of Naboombu, populated by anthropomorphized animals headed by a lion, King Leonidas, and back to the town of Pepperinge Eye.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
The names of all three of the orphaned Rawlins children in this movie can be found in popular culture over the last two decades. Paul, at around six years old, is the youngest of the three orphans taken in by Mrs. Eglantine Price; he is a clever and resourceful young lad who is prone to blurting out whatever is on his mind. The popular television series The Gilmore Girls, which ran from October of 2000 to May of 2007, revolves around Lorelai Gilmore, a single mother who manages the Independence Inn in the fictional town of Stars Hollow Connecticut, and her intellectual teenage daughter Rory. Rory moves out of Lorelai’s home during the sixth season, which aired in 2005, and in walked Paul Anka, a most unusual dog, to fill the hole in her heart. Paul Anka, played by a canine actor named Sparky, had a number of unusual quirks, including being frightened of peas, tissue holders, lint, paperbacks, CDs, framed pictures, and popcorn. His shaggy face and ever-expanding list of odd quirks quickly endeared the Polish Lowland Sheepdog to the audience, and he was featured throughout the remaining seasons, and both the character and the actor returned for the revival miniseries, A Year in The Life.
Carrie, the middle Rawlins sibling, and the only girl is a sensible girl who prefers cooperation over conflict. In 2007 a Golden Retriever by the name of Carrie began performing dances on YouTube, and in a video in 2010 she garnered over nineteen million views. In 2015, Carrie was the winning contestant on a televised Chinese talent show called Challenge Impossible, and she auditioned for America’s Got Talent in 2016 but didn’t make it through the Judge Cuts. Charlie is the eldest of the orphans, a cynical eleven-year-old boy with a bit of a chip on his shoulder, who also possesses a good heart and a quick mind. The 2018 movie A Star is Born, a romantic film directed by Bradley Cooper and starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, introduced a Labradoodle by the name of Charlie. The dog, Bradley Cooper’s own canine companion, was named after Cooper’s father, who died of lung cancer in 2016. The fluffy, friendly pooch stole the show as a much-loved and unforgettable performance and the fact that the fluffy pup is the director’s dog instigated PETA to develop the Compassion in Film Award, given to Bradley Cooper in praise of him casting in-house rather than utilizing a service.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks Inspired Dog Name Considerations
Other individuals may prefer referencing people who were involved with the making of the film, such as Mary, after the author of the books the movie was based on, or Sherman, after the brothers who wrote the songs for the film. Another source of inspiration could be either specific items in the movie such as Star, for the Star of Astoroth, featured animals, like the animals that play against one another in the soccer game on Naboombu, or even the places that are mentioned in the movie, using either a fictional place such as Pepperinge or Naboombu, or a real-life location such as Portobello road or London.
