Introduction
Battlefield Dog Names
The story of one man and his dog is the story of Max, a Malinois who was used to help United States Marines in Afghanistan. Max's handler is Kyle Wincott who is questioned when weapons seized by his squad go missing. Realising that his friend Tyler is among those involved with the shady dealings, the story progresses to them in battle where Max is injured while advancing on a suicide bomber, and Kyle is shot and killed. Kyle's family is informed of his death and accept the return of his body. Max is quite traumatised by the whole event but upon meeting Kyle's brother, Justin, seems to be calmed by his presence. The rest of the story unfolds as they uncover the true story about Kyle's death and the cartel who were involved in the weapons procurement were apprehended and charged. Max and Justin form a unique bond and become companions and the story ends happily. Max was played by a dog named Carlos - both great names for a new dog.
Other dogs involved in war or the battlefield include the story of United States Marine corporal Megan Leavey and her military working dog Rex. This is the true story of their lives and their special bond that benefited the military, and their many achievements.
Damien Lewis's War Dog: The No-Man's Land Puppy Who Took to the Skies, is an amazing story about a dog called Ant - a tiny German Shepherd puppy, and his master, airman Robert Bozdech. They flew together with Bomber Command and Ant saved untold lives with his unique ability to detect the approaching Luftwaffe way before the early warning systems. Ant was a talented dog who could find people buried under rubble. He became the official mascot of 311 (Czech) Squadron. This brave and heroic dog dodged death many times and was awarded the Dickin Medal which is the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross. Ant was eventually grounded by the RAF officials, but he always waited patiently on the runway for his master to return. It is a lovely sentimental story but is also very moving as it acknowledges the contributions of the courageous Czech squadron during the war, and pays homage to Ant, one heck of a brave and loyal dog.
