Introduction
The Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher, also known as the Austrian Pinscher or Osterreichischer Kurzhaarpinscher, is a medium-sized, sturdy dog that was used as an all-purpose farm dog. Their main purpose was to guard the livestock and the home. The Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher does require a significant amount of mental and physical exercise to keep them from becoming a nuisance in the home. They must also be socialized from an early age and have consistent training. Without proper socialization and training, the Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher will have a tendency to bite or become aggressive in an attempt to become the leader in the home. This is not the right breed for a first-time dog owner.
Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher Dog Names in Pop Culture
The Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher is not well-known outside their native Austria; however, they are beginning to become better known throughout Europe with the help of dedicated breeders such as Deborah Korn of DeRastemand Kennel. Korn has been breeding Austrian Shorthaired Pinschers for several years and is the proud breeder of Niam, DeRastemand’s Niam. Niam was born in August of 2011, her sire is Alfred vom Oflinger Grom and her dam is DeRastemand’s Coco-Chanelle. In 2012 Niam became Korn’s first world winner when she was named the Vice World Youth Winner. Niam was then placed with another person who was interested in breeding Austrian Shorthaired Pinschers. Unfortunately, that person died and Niam was brought back to Korn’s kennel. Niam’s curious demeanor has landed her in some sticky situations but her affectionate nature is what melts everyone’s heart when they meet her. While back with Korn, Niam whelped one litter and was an excellent mother. However, Niam was not happy in a kennel situation, causing much strife among the other dogs. She wanted to be back in a family home so Korn found a home where Niam was the only dog and will be very much loved for the rest of her life. Niam’s new owner has found that Niam has a fondness for digging in the mud and in streams and creeks.
Korn’s breeding philosophy is similar to other ethical breeders of all different breed types. She simply wants to produce healthy, well-adjusted companions. Being a show breeder, Korn wants each new generation to be better than the previous one; each dog that walks into the show ring with her kennel name is a representation of her breeding program. Korn also expects each of her Austrian Shorthaired Pinschers to be versatile and retain the typical nature of a farm dog, preserving the breed’s history and conformation. Korn believes strongly in preserving the true pear head characteristic of the Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher which is a distinctive feature of the breed and shows their lineage traces back to the Stone Age peat dogs. The Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher is a historic breed that almost became extinct, but through a preservation process implemented by breeders such as Korn, they are beginning to rebound in numbers, although are still an endangered breed. Korn has been working for years with other Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher breeders to ensure the breed does not suffer the same fate as so many other breeds throughout history.
