Introduction
Officially known as the Commonwealth of Australia, Australia is a sovereign country that includes the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania and a number of smaller islands. The country is the sixth largest in the world as far as land area and its population is around 25 million, much of which is located on the eastern seaboard. The continent of Australia is the oldest, flattest and driest inhabited continent that is megadiverse with a variety of landscapes. The center of the country offers deserts, while there are tropical rainforests in the northeast and mountain ranges in the southeast. Diversity is also present in the country's population; Australia has the 9th largest immigrant population in the world.
With such diversity of landscape and of people, Australia is a great place to look for a unique moniker for your new canine companion.
Australian Dog Names In Pop Culture
In 1882 a scruffy German Collie named Bob was born. It turned out that Bob was ready for adventure; at nine months of age, he left the Macclesfield Hotel in South Australia that was his home, and began as a hitchhiker on railway locomotives. The travel-savvy pooch would frequently embark on interstate trips where he was fortunately welcomed by friendly crews on the trains on which he traveled.
Later known as Bob the Railway Dog, the pup was adored within his home state and beyond. Heather Parker, the Peterborough History Group chair said of the pup, “he had a wonderful temperament and loved people, particularly the engine drivers”. According to Parker, Bob liked Broken Hill and had a friend in Hindley Street, Adelaide, who would give him food. In 1939, Adelaide’s The Advertiser stated that Bob traveled freely until he died at age 13 on trains, suburban trams and the Murray steamers. The pup also attended official functions; for example, he was a guest at the banquet for the opening of the railway from Peterborough to Broken Hill.
E. Cresswell of Adelaide shared Bob’s story in 1895, not long before his death, with The Spectator, an English Magazine, noting that he “passes his whole existence on the train - his favorite seat being on top of the coal box”. Cresswell continued noting that “the most curious part of his conduct is that he has no master, but every engine driver is his friend. At night he follows home his engineman of the day never leaving him or letting him out of his sight until they are back on the Railway Station in the morning, where he starts off on another of his ceaseless journeys”.
Bob was born in a litter of working dogs. Henry Hollamby was the farmer who bred them and told The Southern Argus in 1895 that when Bob was a puppy he was given Mr. James Mott, the keeper of the Macclesfield Hotel. During this time, the railway was being developed to Strathlbyn and Bob followed some men to the line, resulting in his fascination with railways. While many attempted to “catch” Bob, he was not having it. Eventually a brass plate was made for his collar that stated, “stop me not, but let me jog, for I am Bob, the railway dog”. A statue honoring Bob was placed in Peterborough in 2009.
Australian Dog Name Considerations
It makes sense that you are taking the act of choosing a name for your pup seriously. After all, you will be calling your pup by that name for years to come; it should be one that you feel suits your dog while possibly having some meaning to you. While you may have a name in mind before you meet your dog or be able to decide on one right away, it is just as likely that choosing a name for your pooch will be a challenge for you. If you are struggling, a good way to come up with unique name possibilities is to take a closer look at a particular place.
Take Australia, for example. The country has a diverse landscape as well as a diverse population, ensuring a myriad of unique name opportunities, one of which might be just what you are seeking for your pup. If Australia is a place that has meaning for you, it makes sense to take a closer look at the country. After all, with a name from Australia, you will receive regular reminders of a place that is important to you.
Go ahead and embark on a virtual tour of Australia and you may come away with just the right moniker for your canine pal!
