Introduction
Auckland Dog Names in Pop Culture
Wal is a true blue Kiwi farmer often hanging about in a top, shorts and gumboots. Wal just calls Dog ... well... Dog, really. Which gained Dog's unwavering loyalty and respect. The cartoon series shows the antics that Dog and Wal get up to on the farm (it's more of a patch of swamp but no one has told Wal that yet). Dog also has several alter egos, such as the Scarlet Manuka, who loves to try and save cricket balls, and is also known as the Grey Ghost of the Forest. Wal does have a girlfriend called Darlene Hobson, a hairdresser by trade, otherwise known as 'Cheeky'. Dog despises Cheeky, and is always looking for ways to come between Wal and his girlfriend.
The comic strip still enjoys a solid band of followers who have saved all the comic strips from the newspapers, and collected every book that has come out. The loveable dog and his somewhat rough diamond of an owner is really well done, and will capture your heart. It shows the real Kiwi spirit of man and dog, and the sayings and script is totally New Zealand. Many Kiwi kids and adults still have the soft toy version of Dog sitting on their beds at home. This one little cartoon dog changed the Kiwi forever and put New Zealand on the map. If you ask me what dog is the most famous in New Zealand, the one that would come to mind immediately is Dog from Footrot Flats - may he live on forever in cartoon and pop culture history.
