Milo

Atlantis: The Lost Empire, the first science fiction film released by Disney Studios, premiered on June 3, 2001, and made greater use of CGI than any of Disney’s previous animated movies. The movie tells the story of Milo Thatch, a cartographer working at the Smithsonian Institute in 1914, who is sent on an adventure to find the lost city of Atlantis, based off of information found in a book known as the Shepherd’s Journal. In 1994, ninety years after the fantasy-adventure movie, The Mask also had a major character by the name of Milo. Another highly intelligent and creative character, Milo the Jack Russell Terrier was the best friend and confidant of the protagonist Stanley Ipkiss. Milo was played by the canine actor Max, who was trained by Joe McCarter, who later went on train animals for movies such as The Truth about Cats and Dogs, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, and Space Buddies and Santa Buddies - both from the Air Bud franchise.

Director Chuck Russell was leery of using a Jack Russell as opposed to a Corgi or Scotty breed dog due to the fact that Clean Slate, another comedy movie that was coming out around the same time, was also featuring a Jack Russell. Max’s skill and outgoing personality won him over, however, and despite Max’s need for a few more potty breaks than average, due to his tendency to consume large amounts of water when he got excited, it proved to have been an excellent choice. Many of the scenes that involved both Jim Carrey and Max were ad-libbed, in particular, the scene in which Milo refuses to let go of the frisbee while Stanley attempts to stash a large amount of money in his closet, and the scene in which the dog dons the Loki mask, a trick motivated by Max’s love of Fig Newtons, is considered by many to be one of the funniest scenes in the movie, in large part due to Max’s excitement and energy level. Co-star Jim Carrey gave the pooch praise for his acting ability, stating that Milo always hit his mark and in regards to the performance he gave, Gene Shalit of NBC’s Today show remarked that “Milo makes Lassie look like a clutz.” Max even donned a black tie and appeared in a limo when he attended the premiere of the movie, and his character was reprised in the animated series that aired from 2001 to 2003, The Mask: The Animated Series.
