Michael Duncan Clark made one of his initial acting appearances as "Bear," the large but lovable member of the drilling crew. Bear first appears during a scene in which the oil rig appears about to explode. It is partially due to Bear's great strength (he assists Harry in physically shutting off the valve that is threatening to explode) that the rig is saved. Bear is a gentle giant. During the psychiatric evaluations that the team must undergo, Bear breaks down and cries repeatedly (rather unexpected behavior for such a large man). When asked how he wishes to be compensated for his part in taking out the meteor, Bear says he wants to spend the night in the Lincoln bedroom of the White House, a request that the government gladly grants. Bear is feared dead at one point during the film, but he lives to do his part in taking down the meteor and head back home. Bear, like AJ, Chick, and Rockhound, is hailed a hero and is last seen in attendance at the wedding of AJ and Grace.

Bear is a traditional name for a large dog. Sometimes, this moniker will also be bestowed upon a "fuzzy" dog (whether the dog is large or another size). One rather large "Bear" was an actor. Bear the Dog first appeared on an episode of The Golden Girls. Bear played the role of a stray dog that the benevolent Rose brought home, much to her roommate (and the owner of the home they all lived in) Blanche. The running joke involved Rose's trying to hide the dog, who was so large that this was almost an impossible feat. Eventually, Blanche found out that the stray did not find a new home, as Rose had promised he would do. The girls finally found the dog's owners and he was returned safely to them. Bear the Dog also appeared in the series Nurses, and in the movie Wishbone. Little else is known about Bear's career.

Bear has quite the following on both Facebook and Instagram. Although he endured a tough life for many years, Bear is quite a ham. He enjoys the attention of his new owners and loves posing for the camera.

At the beginning of the film, a French Bulldog named Little Richard is riding in the bicycle basket of his owner. Little Richard slips away from his owner and attacks a plastic toy belonging to a rather large man; Little Richard's owner steps up to take his pooch only to see his foe disappear before his eyes as a small part of the asteroid hits the earth. Little Richard is safe, however. Wearing a harness, Little Richard is saved when the asteroid particle blows a hole in the asphalt, and his owner pulls him to safety.

There are a number of other dogs in the film, although none have the presence of Little Richard. However, we can also look at the character attributes of the cast to find some dog breeds that also display courage and teamwork.

Harry is a leader. He raises his daughter all alone; for many years, she has lived on oil rigs with him as he is a single parent. Harry is tough, but very tenderhearted.
