Back in October of 1968, quite a long time ago, the biggest band in the world The Beatles recorded their famous song “Martha, My Dear.” Back in the day, people all over the world rightfully assumed that Martha was probably Paul McCartney’s girlfriend Jane Asher, with whom he had just broken up and decided to commemorate the relationship through a song. However, people could not have been more wrong. Because Martha was not just some human who broke Paul’s heart, she was someone much more kind, loving, and deserving of all the attention. She was his beloved dog.

The adorable English Sheepdog was Paul McCartney’s pet, a girl who had the hearts of all the Beatles and their fans around the world. Paul said that she was a “dear pet of his” and that John Lennon once told him that he was surprised Paul can be so loving towards an animal and that he had never seen him act like that before. McCartney stated in his song that Martha has “always been his inspiration,” and his muse, which is not hard to believe when we consider the immense love we can feel for our pets. She was surely a loved dog who had the honor to spend so much time with one of the greatest musicians in the world, and moreover, a member of the biggest band in the world. It is unclear if she loved the attention of people coming to photograph them wherever they go, but it is certain that Paul took good care of her and provided her with everything that a dog can ever need.

Dogs rarely get the chance to steal the spotlight from their famous owners, but Martha did a pretty good job, so much so that there are numerous texts in the magazines of the time and on the Internet today that discuss her life and her influence on Paul. She died at age 15 in 1981.
