Introduction
Aramaic language is a language group that belongs to the subfamily of Semitic languages and includes Hebrew and Phoenician. Geographically it is spread across the Levant, the Fertile Crescent, and Eastern Arabia, and is considered to be one of the oldest languages in the world. It was originally spoken by the Arameans who lived in what is now Syria. It is one of the languages of the Talmud, and also can be seen in the Biblical works of Ezra and Daniel, and it is also considered to be the language Jesus Christ himself spoke. So, safe to say that it had a lot of influence on the names and languages of today!
Aramaic Dog Names in Pop Culture
Back in October of 1968, quite a long time ago, the biggest band in the world The Beatles recorded their famous song “Martha, My Dear.” Back in the day, people all over the world rightfully assumed that Martha was probably Paul McCartney’s girlfriend Jane Asher, with whom he had just broken up and decided to commemorate the relationship through a song. However, people could not have been more wrong. Because Martha was not just some human who broke Paul’s heart, she was someone much more kind, loving, and deserving of all the attention. She was his beloved dog.
The adorable English Sheepdog was Paul McCartney’s pet, a girl who had the hearts of all the Beatles and their fans around the world. We can now see her in a plethora of photos with Paul, John, Ringo, and George, happily looking at the camera and stealing the show wherever she goes. Paul said that she was a “dear pet of his” and that John Lennon once told him that he was surprised Paul can be so loving towards an animal and that he had never seen him act like that before. Paul confirmed that the love between a dog and their human is a special kind of love, that you can only witness when you see the two of them cuddling, and he says that Martha was quite a cuddly pup.
McCartney stated in his song that Martha has “always been his inspiration,” and his muse, which is not hard to believe when we consider the immense love we can feel for our pets. She was surely a loved dog who had the honor to spend so much time with one of the greatest musicians in the world, and moreover, a member of the biggest band in the world. It is unclear if she loved the attention of people coming to photograph them wherever they go, but it is certain that Paul took good care of her and provided her with everything that a dog can ever need.
Dogs rarely get the chance to steal the spotlight from their famous owners, but Martha did a pretty good job, so much so that there are numerous texts in the magazines of the time and on the Internet today that discuss her life and her influence on Paul. She died at age 15 in 1981.
“Hold your head up
You silly girl
Look what you've done
When you
Find yourself in the thick of it.”
Aramaic Dog Name Considerations
Finding inspiration for the new name for your dog can sometimes seem impossible because just when we need to do something, we find our brains to be a completely blank slate. Which is normal, of course, but quite annoying! Luckily, the muse is out there, and you just need to reach her somehow! For example, choosing the Aramaic language or, more importantly, names that come from the Aramaic culture will give you plenty of options to choose from, and one of them will surely fit your new pup’s personality, looks, and gorgeous puppy eyes.
One example is the name Martha, quite a serious name of Paul McCartney’s beloved dog that even got her own song! Another option is to go for toponyms, or, in plain English, place names. One of such names is Palmyra, the ancient city in present-day Syria, once occupied by Arameans, among others, Aram, a region from which the ancient Northwest Semitic Aramaic tribe emerged, or even Babylon, an ancient city which the Arameans conquered. These places are historical and have amazing stories told about them, so you can even educate your friends and family on the history of the world when they ask you why you named your doggo after a non-existing city today.
