Angels in the Endzone Inspired Dog Names

Two dogs in pop culture in recent years share the same name as leading characters in the film Angels in the Endzone. However, not only do they share the same name (one with a different spelling), but traits too. Jessie from Animal Farm boasts leadership qualities as Jesse does, while King Buck is similar to Coach Buck for his involvement in sport.

Firstly, we’ll talk about Jessie and Jesse. Jesse is the tailback for the Westfield Angels in Angels in the Endzone. When his father dies, he quits the team and ends up falling into the wrong crowd committing crimes. His brother, Kevin, prays to the angels to turn Westfield Angels into a winning team to bring Jesse back. He succeeds, and the team makes their way to victory with Jesse leading the way.

Jessie in Animal Farm boasts these same leadership qualities. She appears as a Border Collie and the Movie-for-TV production narrator for Animal Farm. Animal Farm received a lot of negative press, but it was a fantastic movie all the same. It followed barn animals on a farm who revolt against their inhumane and abusive owner. The film is moving and heartbreaking, but a lot of Jessie’s personalities are not that dissimilar to that of Jesse – especially when it comes to death.

Another dog in pop culture relating to Angels in the Endzone is King Buck. Buck was a Labrador Retriever who competed in 63 consecutive championships of Field Trials. He was the champion for two years in a row and was the only dog to do so for the next four decades. King Buck also became the first dog to appear on a duck stamp from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Traditionally, this stamp featured waterfowl.

It won’t be lost on you how similar King Buck is to Coach Buck in Angels in the Endzone. Coach Buck is a dominant character who takes his cues from Jesse’s little brother to help the Westfield Angels win their games. Paul Dooley plays coach Buck.

Paul was a stand-up comedian who liked to draw cartoons in his youth. His work featured in the local Parkersburg paper in West Virginia. He is more commonly known for his acting work in several films such as Popeye, Hairspray, Sixteen Candles, and Breaking Away. Paul has also received nominations for two Primetime Emmys as well as one win.
