American Water Spaniel Dog Names

The American Water Spaniel is a medium sized brown spaniel that performs like a spaniel and a retriever. They are considered to be one of the smaller hunting breeds but they have a big job to do when in the field. They are excellent hunters and love spending time out in the field with their master. They are recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the United Kennel Club (UKC). This breed is native to Wisconsin but is still a rare breed. It is not often that you get to hear or read about an American Water Spaniel that has done something interesting. Digger is an American Water Spaniel and when he is competing in the Sporting Group ring at AKC and UKC shows, he looks a little out of place because of his smaller size, lighter build and curly, brown hair. Compared to the muscular, solidly built retrievers, the athletic pointers and the elegant setters, it is surprising that the judge even gives Digger a look. With his plain brown coloring, there is not much that is eye-catching about Digger until you watch him in motion; Digger has confidence and swagger that belies his brown appearance. That is why Digger has earned several Sporting group wins and Best in Show wins. 

Digger, or more formally known as Grand Champion Waterway Game CRK Hot Diggity, seems to have been born to shine even though he is simply a plain brown dog. Digger’s breeder and owner, Linda Hattrem, hoped Digger would have some of the same success his mother, Waterway Game CRK Mare-Z Dotes, had during her show career. His mother was the top winning American Water Spaniel in history and was tied for the breed’s record of holding the most Best in Show wins. Digger, however, has out shined his mother’s two Best in Show wins with a total of seven Best in Show wins and 18 Sporting group wins. Digger is a natural showman and spends many weekends at dog shows across the country with Hattrem. When not competing in the conformation show ring, Digger can be found at his home in Sparta, Wisconsin. Hattrem feels that Digger will remain truly competitive for another year while he is still in his prime and then he will retire from the show ring after breaking almost every record set for the American Water Spaniel. Digger will then enjoy his retirement hunting and lounging around their rural home.
