Introduction
American Dad Dog Names In Pop Culture
When Stan was a young boy, he and Freddy used to be best friends, virtually inseparable based on Stan's account of their time together. But when Stan's father, Jack Smith, decided to bail on his family and leave Stan's mother, Betty Smith, to pick up the pieces, the boy and the dog's time together would soon come to an abrupt end. Jack left a hole in his family's finances, as well as a hole in their hearts, and Betty realized that she wouldn't be able to pay for the home they lived in all on her own. Betty was able to find a more affordable apartment building for herself and Stan to live in, but there was one catch to this otherwise fortuitous turn of events; the landlord of said apartment adhered to a strict "no dogs allowed" policy.
Rather than give Freddy up for adoption, or find a nice animal shelter for the dog to stay at, Betty concocted a plan that was more in line with the show's particular brand of black comedy; Betty Smith told her son that Freddy had contracted "Air Bud Disease" and that Stan would be better off putting Freddy down himself. In a scene that clearly references the book Old Yeller (in which a another young boy by the name of Travis has to tearfully put down his dog, the titular Old Yeller, after the latter contracts rabies from a wolf,) Stan takes Freddy out to his back yard and puts the poor pooch down with a 12 gauge shotgun. Freddy would go on to reappear as a benevolent, sea-fairing spirit later on in "Stan's Best Friend," where he helps the head of the Smith household cope with the untimely (if not, morbidly humorous) demise of the dog that Francine ultimately gets for Steve. Freddy appears again at the end of the episode, after Steve's dog Kisses has finally been allowed to rest in peace.
