Introduction
You can have alternative music, and you can have country music. But what if you want both? You can; it’s called alternative country. Alternative country music is either country or country rock, which has an eclectic mix of subcultures in the combination. It can loosely feature rock, country, pop, or alternative rock too. The culture originated in the late 20th century and includes such well-known songs as Windfall by Son Volt, and Barrier Reef by Old 97’s.
Before you get too lost in the music, why not show others how passionate you are? Consider naming your new adopted pet with alternative country dog names. The variety available will surprise you. Below are a few options to start you off on the right track.
Alternative Country Dog Names in Pop Culture
Alternative country music is trendy and funky, so there’s every reason to believe that dogs sharing the name of such a band will be too! Two examples include Blue and Joe.
Blue, with the full band name of Blue Rodeo, is a Canadian alternative country rock group that began performing together in the early 1980s. They have produced 15 albums, two DVDs and have several side projects on the go as well. Blue Rodeo is still going strong all these years later, but band members have changed over this time. Some of their more popular songs include After the Rain and Outskirts.
Blue, the dog, is just as popular as Blue Rodeo, the alternative country music band. Blue is the dog of well-known Canadian ice hockey commentator Don Cherry. Don is a sports writer, NHL coach (retired) and professional hockey player (retired). His dog, Blue, was a gift from the Boston Bruins while he was still their head coach. Blue was a much-loved white Bull Terrier who appeared in many hockey videos within the Rock’Em Sock’Em series. Don has owned several Bull Terriers since the original Blue of the 1970s – all of which he named Blue.
Equally as famous as Blue was Joe, the movie dog from Run, Joe, Run. Joe is a German Shepherd who appeared on the Saturday morning show on NBC during the 1970s. Joe was in the military’s K9 Corp, working alongside Sergeant Will Corey. In the show, someone accused Joe of attacking his master, with the punishment for the crime being euthanasia. Joe escaped, and officials put a bounty on his head. His master believed him to be innocent and tried to find him before officials did. The entire series follows Will Corey trying to find Joe.
Joe in alternative country, however, is Joe Pernice, an alternative country and indie rock musician, and writer. Joe featured in several bands including Pernice Brothers and Scud Mountain Boys. His latest works include a studio album on Team Love Records called Roger Lion in 2015, as well as collaborations with Norman Blake and Mike Belitsky in The New Mendicants.
In his writing career, Joe had as much success as he did in the alternative country scene. He published a series of rock music short books, as well as a novel called It Feels So Good When I Stop through Penguin Books. Joe’s music is still commonplace on radio stations and in music stores.
Alternative Country Dog Name Considerations
Before you end up with alternative country dog names you regret, it’s important to take the time to consider your dog and your passions. While your favorite alternative country band might be the 2003 alternative band The Little Willies, do you think those three words would be suitable for a dog? Possibly not. Therefore, the first consideration is the feasibility of the name. Imagine trying to fill out their veterinary paperwork with such a mouthful!
The personality of your dog can also be something worth considering. Some dogs have old souls, suiting names like Graham, Roman, and Wayne, but some have more energy, making them more ideal for alternative country dog names such as Hansen, Guthrie, and Hawk. Look at your dog and call them by the name you think will “be” them. You’ll have your answer soon enough.
The gender can also make a difference to the variety of alternative country dog names you have on your list. In most cases, you would not name your female dog Matthew or Thomas. You would, however, call her Carrie or Lindi. Some names are unisex, but not all are. The color makes very little difference, so the options are endless on that front. Pick your alternative country dog names wisely.
