Algeria Dog Names

Algeria has a long history with animals, especially dogs, cats, and donkeys. At some point or another, each one of these animals has been beloved and kept as the pampered house pets or been stranded and left to fare for themselves. It comes as no surprise either, since Algeria is part of North Africa, right on the Mediterranean Coast. It is an area that has been known to abuse strays, but really love and care for the animals with a home. 

That being said, there are many dogs in Algeria with stories. For instance, take the donkey riding dog, for example. There are no details about him, no real name, but what is for sure is that this dog was riding a donkey carriage from the local market. The video, uploaded by some passersby, has gained traction online. Imagine being able to tell your dog to go to the market with the donkey carriage! Surely the owner already knew and made arrangements with market merchants, before sending the dog. At least everyone hopes so! If not, the dog still looked happy, so one can only wonder. 

Then, there are the dog breeds from Algeria. Two of the most popular are Azawakh and Sloughi. A spin on Greyhounds, these two breeds are amazing runners, muscular, tall and strong. Build to withstand unstable sand, these breeds have been known to be excellent competitors. Unsurprisingly, they've won several dog shows as well.  

One such racing champion was Ulfah Shi'Rayan, coming in 45th for the breed Sloughi in the USA SSARA. There was also Sameer Shi'Rayan, with an undefeated high score at the 2011 NARC Spring Racing Challenge. For NARC's 10th anniversary, there was a special event called the Legends race, featuring top-notch competitors. All the dogs featured were at least eight years old. The top four winners were O'Dah, Omayma, Omneya and Najeeba. 

But the Azawakh isn't left behind so easily. For the Show Dog of the Year National Leaderboard in 2017, Aust Ch Grantulla Tende won first place. The dog stood proudly at by the judges and got awarded a red ribbon. Coming in second place, right behind Tende was Aust Ch Jumadabey Ovarzazate, also an Azawakh. 

So, although Algeria may not be ideal for all animals, it has produced two magnificent breeds, and occasionally features dogs smart enough to ride a donkey carriage to the market. We have to call that a win.
