Introduction
Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog Dog Names in Pop Culture
When considering famous dogs named Butch, one cartoon Bulldog comes to mind. This dog is the creation of cartoon genius Tex Avery, and the dog has appeared in both Tom and Jerry cartoon episodes as well as several appearances opposite Droopy Dog. Butch has gone by more than one moniker during his time. He has been called The Irish Dog (in early versions of himself), and he is sometimes called Spike on the Tom and Jerry show.
Another Butch that many kids at heart will recognize is a member of the Disney family. Butch was created in 1940 to appear as the enemy of Mickey's dog, Pluto. The pair affectionately spars over bones, and, at times, it appears that Butch would have Dinah the Dachshund for his own if he could only draw her interest away from Pluto.
Disney's Butch first appeared in the cartoon short "Bone Trouble." A sleepy Bulldog, Butch is not overly concerned that anyone will attempt to abscond with his bone; however, Butch does not consider the persistence of Pluto, who does his best to grab Butch's bone and run away with it. Butch is also an antagonist where cats are concerned as well. Appearing in the cartoon "Figaro and Frankie," Butch serves to greatly irritate the kitten named Figaro. However, Butch does not stop there. He serves to antagonize Donald Duck, Minnie and Mickie Mouse, a field mouse named Ferdinand, and even a small puppy or two.
One of the most prominent recurring roles for Butch takes place on The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse show. Here, Pete (an antagonist of Mickey and Goofy) owns Butch, and is used to further antagonize Pluto. Butch and Pluto compete in any number of areas, such as dog shows. Ironically, at times, Pluto and Butch can work together. In an episode titled "Bubble Trouble," Pluto and Butch work together building sandcastles and keeping their owners safe from hazards along the water such as cacti.
Cartoon connoisseurs will admit that Butch looks very much like the Spike/Butch of Tom and Jerry fame and Hector of Looney Toons fame.
