Introduction
The Akbash is a white Turkish sheepdog that is a rare breed in the United States. They are loyal, loving dogs that are used to guard livestock out in open fields. Ranchers and farmers looking for a solid, intelligent dog to help guard their livestock should really take a closer look at the Akbash. Even though working Akbash generally are not family companions, people are beginning to see the value of having an Akbash around the home as a guard dog and companion. When bringing an Akbash into your home, chances are that they will not have a permanent name and it will be up to you to find a name that fits their personality and maybe pays tribute to their Turkish heritage just a bit.
Akbash Dog Names in Pop Culture
Being a rare breed
in the United States, there are few Akbash dogs that have made the news. They
are not the type of dog that a celebrity would tote around across the country
and they are not popular enough to have found a starring role in a movie or
television show. However, thanks to YouTube, there is an Akbash from Oklahoma
named Chooch that has stolen the hearts of millions. Chooch is a rescue Akbash
that is about 7 years old. The footage on YouTube that endeared Chooch to
millions of viewers was filmed on May 13, 2017 and shows little baby goats
jumping up and down off of Chooch as he naps.
Along with his brother, Chebon, Chooch is the guardian of a flock of goats out in a pasture. This flock of goats contains several baby goats along with their moms. Both Chooch and Chebon protect the flock when they go out to the pasture and bring the goats back to the farm at the end of the day. Chooch became an internet sensation when his owner shot a video of him lying on his side sleeping and the baby goats were climbing on him or jumping over him. Some of the baby goats even found Chooch and Chebon to be the perfect mattress and would curl up and sleep on top of the slumbering guardian dogs. Both dogs live with these goats all year round and are not considered to be domesticated dogs. During the winter months, the goats, especially the babies, can be found curled up against the dogs for warmth. They are diligent in protecting their flock and will closely watch the herd and guard against any predators. The baby goats are with the brothers from birth and are extremely comfortable with them. The goats do not fear the Akbash brothers because they seem to know that these dogs are there to keep them safe. When Chooch and Chebon move the goats to and from the pasture, they closely watch to make sure none become lost. When one does lose its way, one brother will go searching while the other one stays with the herd. Chooch and Chebon know what humans are supposed to approach their flock as well and will become aggressive if their people do not accompany the strangers. Both brothers will generally only give one warning bark before they attack anyone or anything that is perceived as a threat to their flock.
Akbash Dog Name Considerations
The Akbash is a livestock guardian dog that is mainly used for that purpose and therefore is not usually seen as a family companion. This does not mean that they cannot be integrated into a family setting, but they are happiest when they are out in the fields with their flocks. The Akbash is native to Turkey and is still prevalent in that country. Many people, when trying to decide on a name for their new puppy, will look at the origins of their puppy for inspiration. Turkish names can be hard to pronounce but there are several names that are easier to say and may fit your puppy’s personality. Research names that you find interesting and see if your family can agree on one name. By choosing a name of Turkish origins you can almost guarantee that there will not be another dog in the neighborhood with the same name. This will keep any confusion down when you visit the dog park or are out walking in the neighborhood. You would not rush to name your new infant, therefore, you should not feel the need to rush and find a name for your new puppy. There are a lot of options and finding the right name may take a while.
