If you've ever lost a pet, you will be able to relate to the story of Ashanti and Nick Gray. Nick is an over-the-road semi-truck driver from a small town in Michigan, and he took his beloved pooch Ashanti with him on the road because he did not want to leave her home while he was gone. Ashanti is a 100-pound Presa Canario, which is a type of Mastiff. On a recent trip, Nick and Ashanti were headed through Pennsylvania when Ashanti nudged him, letting her master know she needed a potty break. 

Nick pulled over on the side of the road and hooked up Ashanti’s leash before getting out. However, Ashanti had other ideas and decided to slip out of her collar and make a break for it. Nick said he usually has no problem with her running away whether she is leashed or not. This day, Ashanti just decided she needed some exercise and ran. But Nick was devastated. He waited on the side of that road for hours hoping Ashanti would return, but he had to leave eventually to deliver the load he was carrying. 

Nick called his brother Jason and told him about Ashanti being lost, and Jason found a group of animal rescuers in Portersville, Pennsylvania who said they would help. Led by Leslie Mortimer, who is a dog owner herself, she got together a small group to look for the missing pooch. Some of the volunteers made flyers and posted them around the area; others went out and convened a search party in the area where Ashanti was last seen. 

However, every time someone would spot the large pup, she would run away from them, even when they tried to lure her to them with food. She seemed like she was having fun according to some rescuers, but others say that she looked like she was just afraid. Eventually, they changed tactics and started setting traps to get her to stay in one spot long enough to catch her safely. They had neighbors with trail cams and home security live feed cameras calling in tips on where they spotted Ashanti, but she was always two steps ahead of them. 

After a few weeks, they noticed that she was hanging around a certain area where there were several restaurants like Arby’s and a Mexican restaurant named El Canelo. So, they baited a trap with Arby’s sandwiches and taco meat and watched on camera while Ashanti sniffed the food. As soon as she grabbed the bait, the door on the 60-inch cage shut and they had her. After 25 days of misery and worry, Nick finally got his fur baby back. He still takes Ashanti with him, but now he keeps her harnessed in a special harness for large dogs so she cannot get lost again.
