Introduction

In West Africa, there is a group of individuals who are known as Akans. This unique group of people live along the Ivory Coastline in Ghana in the western part of Africa. They are the most widespread and largest group of people in Cote d’Ivoire, Togo, and Ghana. The Akan arrived in Ghana between the 11th and 18th centuries and lived in small villages divided into different wards of families. They believe in tribal unity, morality, and a supreme deity who they believe created the universe. Although the Akan are a bit primitive, they often use dogs such as the Basenji, Africanis, and the Rhodesian Ridgeback for hunting.

Akan Dog Name Considerations

The Akans of Ghana often name their babies and pets for the day of the week that they were born on or the order of which they were born. This type of tradition is actually common in the African diaspora and West Africa as well. Similarly, others have been known to name their children for their family names or a special circumstance when they were born. There are over 250 known Akan family names with some strictly for males and some for females. There are also many African names, which are Akan as well, such as Amrah, which means unique, Jabari, which means brave, and Damisi, which means cheerful.

Some other cute Akan names for your furry family member include Mina, which means delight, Kali, which means energetic, Sanura, which means intelligent, and Oringo, which means hunter and is perfect for a hunting doggo. It is a good idea to get to know your canine kid before making the final decision on your pup’s moniker. You may see some kind of quirk or habit that your doggo has that gives you an idea for a perfect name. Whichever title you pick, make sure you like it because you will likely be using it for a long time to come.
