Because Tamaki didn’t know what breed Kitai is (she thinks he was a mix of a Wire-haired Terrier and Lhasa Apso), she made it a point to tell people that he was a “shelter dog” in order to raise awareness. Kitai became an unofficial ambassador that gives other shelter dogs hope, which is fitting given that the name “Kitai” means “hope” in Japanese.

Tamaki and Kitai became inseparable and as a pastime, she started designing costumes for her pooch to wear. After setting up a blog dedicated to Kitai, he became a canine celebrity and gained significant media attention, including a visit on “The Today Show”. Tamaki also took the opportunity to use Kitai’s popularity to help raise fund for spay and neuter programs. Sadly, on March 18 2014, Kitai passed away at the age of 12. However, his legacy lives on and he retains his reputation as the “cutest dog ever”.
