Abu Dhabi Dog Names

Lulu Island is a 1,050-acre man-made island located off the coast of Abu Dhabi Island. At the time of writing, Lulu Island is only accessible by boat and plans are in place to redevelop this interesting destination. Lulu is also the name of a Black Labrador Retriever who “flunked” out of the CIA’s explosive detection “puppy class”. Pictures of Lulu were shared by thousands, perhaps because her story is so relatable. The pup went through intense training for a “daily grind” job and then realized that sniffing out bombs was not for her.

According to a statement on the CIA website, a few weeks into her training, Lulu began to show signs that she was not interested in detecting the smells of explosives. Dogs are able to detect about 19,000 explosive scents, which means they require a lot of training before beginning work. Prospective bomb-sniffing dogs go through a six-week long training course where they work seven days a week to learn to identify threats. After the six-week training, they begin a one-on-one training with their handlers that lasts for 10 weeks. Once successfully graduated, a dog can detect explosives in cars and luggage. They can then expect to engage in a 60-hour canine workweek in a career that tends to last seven or eight years and can include work with the U.S. Park Police, local police departments and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

According to the CIA, Lulu was a year and a half old and was the smallest of six dogs in her training class. She was being trained to work with the Fairfax County Police Department in Virginia. According to a statement on Twitter by the CIA, “there are a million reasons why a dog has a bad day.” The CIA explained that they tried to work with Lulu and make her happy. The agency reported that when K9’s lose energy and focus, trainers act like “doggy psychologists” to figure out what will help the dog do better on the job. A dog may be bored or need some play time or a break from training. Or perhaps they have a medical condition that needs to be addressed. In the end, Lulu “was clearly no longer enjoying herself." Apparently, this was not the life that the pup had in mind for herself. Fortunately, Lulu easily found a new home; she was adopted by her handler. Lulu now spends her time “sniffing out rabbits” and enjoying the company of another pup named Harry.
